The role of long-lived dark states in the photoluminescence dynamics of poly„phenylene vinylene... conjugated polymers. II. Excited-state quenching versus ground-state depletion

چکیده
The two pulse fluorescence bleaching experiments reported in an earlier paper @J. Chem. Phys. 117, 454 ~2002!# are reanalyzed in the context of additional experiments. The fluorescence bleaching observed in that paper was originally ascribed to ground-state depletion. By analyzing the absorption saturation behavior and the magnitude of the pump–probe signal, we find that the absorption cross section of poly~phenylene vinylene! at 400 nm is two orders of magnitude too small to significantly deplete the ground state given the pump fluences used in that experiment. Instead, the observed depletion is due to a combination of exciton–exciton annihilation at early times and dark state luminescence quenching at later times. Different experiments have different sensitivities to the fluence-dependent quenching, with time-resolved experiments like transient emission and fluorescence decay time consistently underestimating the exciton–exciton annihilation rate. Experiments that measure the integrated fluorescence, such as fluorescence saturation and bleaching, result in a consistent value for the exciton–exciton annihilation constant of 6 310 cm/s, while the dark state quenching constant is estimated to be at least 1.2 310 cm/s. Indirect evidence based on the wavelength and sample dependence of the dark state formation suggest that the dark states are charge-separated polarons. The relatively large quenching constants are consistent with what has been observed in other conjugated polymers and suggest that the long-lived dark states in particular are effective quenchers, capable of quenching thousands of surrounding chromophores. © 2003 American Institute of Physics. @DOI: 10.1063/1.1540093#

The role of long-lived dark states in the photoluminescence dynamics of phenylene vinylene conjugated polymers
The role of intermediate nonluminescent states in the relaxation of singlet excitons in the conjugated polymer poly~phenylene vinylene! ~PPV! and its soluble derivative poly@(2-methoxy-5-hexyloxy-p-phenylene) vinylene# ~MH-PPV! is investigated. Time-resolved luminescence and absorption measurements provide evidence for a long-lived, weakly emissive species in PPV at 17 K, in addition to the lum...
متن کاملThe effect of broken conjugation on the excited state: ether linkage in the cyano-substituted poly(p-phenylene vinylene) conjugated polymer poly(2,5,2',5'-tetrahexyloxy-8,7'-dicyano-di-p-phenylene vinylene).
We investigate the effect of broken conjugation on the excited state dynamics of excimers in cyano-substituted phenylene-vinylene polymers. We compare previous studies on the well-characterized poly(2,5,2',5'-tetrahexyloxy-8,7'-dicyano-di-p-phenylene vinylene) (CN-PPV) with poly[oxa-1,4-phenylene-1,2-(1-cyano)-ethenylene-2,5-dioctyloxy-1,4-phenylene-1,2-(2-cyano)-ethenylene-1,4-phenylene] (CN-e...

We present photoluminescence and electroluminescence studies of bilayers and blends formed from poly~vinyl carbazole! ~PVK! and poly~pyridyl vinylene phenylene vinylene! ~PPyVPV! copolymer derivatives. Bilayers of PVK and the PPyVPV copolymers have a photoluminescence emission which cannot be assigned to either the photoluminescence of PVK or the PPyVPV layer. The blends of the two polymers sho...
متن کاملTime domain investigation of the intrachain vibrational dynamics of a prototypical light-emitting conjugated polymer.
Coherent nuclear motion of the carbon backbone is monitored in real time in substituted poly(phenylene)-vinylene in both excited and ground electronic state using sub-10-fs light pulses. Characteristic features of the intrachain vibrational dynamics are obtained. We observe vibrational dephasing in the excited state within 1 ps (time constant T(2e) approximately 300 fs). These findings are in a...
متن کاملGap-State Induced Photoluminescence Quenching of Phenylene Vinylene Oligomer and Its Recovery by Oxidation
We demonstrate that the gap states at the interface of Ca and a phenylene vinylene oligomer thin film are responsible for the dramatic quenching of its photoluminescence (PL). Upon oxidation of the Ca layer, the midgap states are removed, and the PL intensity recovers. From the cumulative Ca deposition and oxidation study, a 30 Å Ca oxide layer between the oligomer and the Ca metal prevents PL ...
